Luff Groove 2008/03/24 13:18
Any concensus on a good and economic luff groove system to buy.

My original Holt Allen system is knackered, and I've run out of options to cut worn sections out.

Not roller furling - just a straightfoward single groove luff foil.

Advice appreciated before I bite the bullet.

Cheers,

Keith in Singapore

Keith,

if you're interested I've got a tuff luff 1205 which came off a M/H boat - never fitted to my fractional but I assume should be long enough for you (cost me £35+postage - so same for you). Now surplus as I've picked up a Furlex. I'll check what the postage might be and measure just to be on the safe side.

Cheers

Andy,

Posted a message before but didn't get through I think.

Yep am interested. Has it got the top & bottom stops / feeder etc.

Reckon length shouldn't be an issue - but if you can give me a measurement I can check my forestay length at the weekend.

Condition - reckon it's what in % of new ?

Is it able to be coiled without splitting and to be stuffed in a box for sending to Singapore.

If you can get approximate postage and it looks like a goer will be in touch via e-mail.

Cheers,

Keith in Singapore

Keith,

what I've got is the double luff groove plastic extrusion (part no 1205) and the bottom (feeder end part no 1205-2) and top stop, both in stainless. I don't have a pre-feeder. Apart from being a bit dusty and some sticky bits from the tape used to coil it it looks pretty good. I've got it coiled in a box which is 80 X 80 X 5 cm and it weighs just under 3Kg.

I got a bit of a shock over postage - for £45-35 (GBP) its 15days+ on delivery and no tracking or insurance. For £52-70 its 5days+ no tracking but insured to £150 and for £66-50 its 3 days and full tracking and insurance to £150.

If your still interested then I'm OK to send on approval - if its OK then post plus £35, if not then just the post. Fully understand if you don't want to risk it.

On the length, it’s freezing here at the mo – had snow over the weekend! I don’t want to uncoil the extrusion until I’ve warmed it up, apparently below 15C it can crack, I’ll see if I can find somewhere warm and get the length to you,

Cheers Andy

Andy,

Am sure it will be fine - no feeder is not a problem - have got a good one of the old foil.

Postage doesn't surprise me - it is what it is.

I'll still try & measure mine, or get a luff length from my sailmaker.

Leave decision with me - and then we can sort transferring money.

Cheers indeed,

Keith,

apologies it took so long to get back, the foil length including the stainless end pieces is 8.57m (or 28ft in old money).

Cheers

Re:Luff Groove 2008/04/23 06:02
Andy,

That sounds right - My forestay length overall is (give or take) 30ft.

The only slight reservation is that the Tuff Luff website says not to open up the foil to take it off once installed - assume thats because it gets worn or can break if you open it up when it's older.

I've got a sta-lock terminal on my forestay so can easily feed the foil on to the stay without having to open up the extrusion to get over terminals, but has it got any signs of stress from being opened up before for removal - or does it appear OK.

99% there.

Tks,
