Set up for Masthead rig 2007/09/12 11:09

Does anyone have any details for setting up a masthead rig? Up till now I have only ever had fractional rigged boats so it is all a bit of a mystery to me!! Would be really useful to know length from masthead to stern and rig tensions for inner and outer stays.
Look forward to any responses
Thanks

Hi Martin,
I've posted a masthead rig tuning guide from Hall Spars in the US in the Boats Technical section - we just followed this when we put the new mast on Chuckles this year.
I'll work on getting the backstay length for you!
cheers,
Stephen

Stephen,
Out of interest, what was the cost of your new mast - rough order of magnitude.
Might be worthwhile people checking how their insurance covers them - there is small print relating to proportions of costs etc., and values of spars are not updated, but aluminium and stainless as a commodity has increased in price, so people may be under insured.
A benchmark would be useful.

Actually turned out to be less than I feared...
Mast £980, Spinlock spinnaker track and car £125, Boom £199.

That does indeed sound like a bargain.
Did it include any standing rigging / turning blocks at the heel fitting etc. and assume you had to fit all the other bits to it and run all the cables.
And how did the heel fitting work on the existing inverted 'T' deck plate
Makes the cost of the pole track and fitting somewhat of a sore thumb....
So the next thing to change is the dodgy chainplates. Slingshot comes out on Friday for her annual splash and dash, which will include new rubbing strakes (nice job with all those glassed in bolt heads) and new chainplates.
Cheers,
Keith in Singapore

Hi Keith,
We did the standing rigging bit ourselves with the local chandler. All in all; new mast, boom, bits and wires plus some labour and swageing + VAT we were looking at about £2200.
The mast foot T fitting: I cut off the vertical section and angle ground it down flat and then fitted the new mast foot on top, bolting through and screwing into the bulkhead where it clashed.
The new mast has turning blocks on the base instead of the sheaves on the original.
Cheers,
Jez
