Drying out against a wall 2007/10/10 20:20
Just for information: GK24s will stand on the keel & dry out against a wall to enable scrubbing / antifouling etc. Andy ['Scallywag'- Portsmouth] says he has done it more than once and the keel holds the weight. I am going to dry out 'Upgrade' [Poole] this weekend. Anybody got any information for or against?

Used to do Gate Krasher IV twice a year. Absolutely fine, the only problem I ever had was that she was inboard diesel, and tended to sit down by the stern. Even so, all she did was sit on her rudder. Once i'd worked out that her centre of balance was a bit aft, then I used to tie the bow in tight (we were nose on to a slipway that was lower than the boat as the tide went out) and then never had a problem from then on.

I dried out my GK-24, Murphy, against the wall at Bangor slipway which is moderately steep. We ended up with the boat sitting down on the rudder bow up. I have a GM10 inboard so perhaps this explains why. We were able to manually lift the stern enough to put in a couple of timber supports until the tide came in again. Next time I think I will support the boat by tieing the stern tighter to the wall before the tide goes out.

Saw the discussion and put up a picture of Parknook dried out against the wall at Granton. I agree with other writers about GK's being stern heavy. I thought it was just mine with her new Yanmar 15hp inboard that was beautifully shoe horned in!! I have other drying out pictures from different angles and if it is of use I can post them as well. Have a look at Parknook's profile for another picture of drying out.
