Hi Robin - are we right in thinking these pictures are taken on the Percuil River, Webbs yard? regards Dawn and Anthony (Go Krazi)

A remarkable transformation! How long has it taken to get to this stage? I'm 2 years into my refurb and planning early retirement to get the job finished. Keep us updated.

hi Gordon,
Well we are working a bit quicker!! 2 weeks so far! Hooligan will be back in the water around 12th April, complete with new racing sails, new headlinings, re-covered cushions, stripped and painted deck, hull, stripe etc. However some jobs will have to wait till next year!!!
thanks for your interest
Robin

Out of interest, I've never seen or experienced a GK drying out fully on her side.

Do they lay down / refloat without any particular precautions to stop them filling up?

Imagine that being so beamy and voluminous there's not much of a problem, but useful to know if ever I get caught out - even though tidal range is only about 2.0m here.

And - how did you get from lying down to upright enough to hoist on to a trailer ?

Apart from that - she looks like a good fixer upper - much like Slingshot when she slithered my way covered in bird crap....

Cheers,

Keith in Singapore
Slingshot - starting to look a bit better...from a distance...

Re:Progress so far!!! 2008/03/24 16:58
hi Keith,

I have to admit that i had never laid a gk over like that before, but i do know they're a good strong little boat so i wasn't worried about damage. If the top sides hadn't been in such a bad state i prob would have stuck an old mattress under neath. I tied the boat at right angles to the beach with just two lines running to the shore, then three of us stood on the rail and a fourth tightened lines to ensure that it tipped the rightway, (upbeach) It took a couple of hours to dry fully out, and went over very slowly and in a completely controlled manner. I went onboard a few times and checked for any cracking or stressing in the hull, but she was fine. I would recomend it if you've got an inboard tho.

As for getting the boat back upright i extended the forks of the telehandler over the boat from the down hill side, then tipped the forks forward to there full extent, i lift boats with duplex slings as i find them easier to work with, and to lengthen if needed, on the GK i used 2 x 9m slings approx 1 foot either side of keel. I then just lifted the boat and tilted the forks back untill she was upright. Reverse the trailer in and hey presto, 1 grimy, smelly GK on a trailer and off to the yard for hours and hours of tlc!!

I have now built a cradle for hooligan and so i will now float her in and out of the cradle and lift on the trailer, as i do with most of the other keel boats i move annually.

regards
Robin
