Thoughts on Volvo's 2005/02/09 15:56
I've got a passing thought at the moment of picking up a GK24 in Singapore which is fitted with a 7.5 hp Volvo diesel / sail drive.

Any feedback on these units - Things to look out for - Known issues - Spares availability and prices (meaning are there any copy parts being made) - Internal corrosion problems - Sail drive leg issues - Life span of the seals.

And how does it perform in terms of going / stopping power.

Cheers,

Keith
Slingshot - starting to look a bit better...from a distance...

I ran a Volvo MD5 / 110S saildrive in my boat, and found it to be a good combination.

The engine's a bit of a "plodder" - single pot, large piston, but the large flywheel means you get a really low tickover, and it's quite efficient.

The deep saildrive arrangement means you're less likely to run over ropes etc, and runs quite smoothly.

I've had to change the engine (the Volvo had been rebuilt twice, and was well past it's sell by date) and replaced with a Beta 10 (higher revving twin), but I've kept the original saildrive.

The Volvo's a bit heavy for racing purposes mind you !!
