I ran a Volvo MD5 / 110S saildrive in my boat, and found it to be a good combination.
The engine's a bit of a "plodder" - single pot, large piston, but the large flywheel means you get a really low tickover, and it's quite efficient.
The deep saildrive arrangement means you're less likely to run over ropes etc, and runs quite smoothly.
I've had to change the engine (the Volvo had been rebuilt twice, and was well past it's sell by date) and replaced with a Beta 10 (higher revving twin), but I've kept the original saildrive.
The Volvo's a bit heavy for racing purposes mind you !!
