New Wave
John Spruce writes in with details of his GK, 'New Wave'

Peter Roebuck & I bought New Wave in January 2004 from John Allan. She is hull number X201 and built 1976, I think, and is a fractional rig with an outboard.

She was suffering from having lain ashore with water in the hull and this had rotted the base of the lockers and the headlining was peeling off. We decided to replace the damaged interior woodwork and remove the headlining completely, applying several coats of white bilge paint. (yes you do get some condensation but at least you can get at all the deck fittings!). The opportunity was taken to remove the small locker by the bulkhead in order to make more space in the saloon. When required a coolbox stows neatly in its place. The flooring was replaced by marine ply covered with best B&Q cork bathroom tiles treated with copious coats of matt varnish to make them less slippy. This was many times cheaper than faced ply and looks very presentable. The heads were stripped and overhauled and the boat completely rewired.

We decided to modify the mast mounted deck pulleys and fit angle to the deck, through the deck ring reinforcement. Since then I have also added tensioned wires inside the boat down to the mast step to reduce the halyard loading on the deck. We can now get a good boot to fit around the mast base to make it watertight.

Some mast repairs, new standing rigging, and a coat of deckpaint and antifoul and we were ready for our first season.

Subsequently we have added new Kemp sails, new instruments, a sound system and a portable cooker to improve performance and comfort on board. The old Suzuki finally expired and I have now bought a new Tohatsu 6HP sail drive. This winter I am overhauling the forehatch and fabricating new companionway hatch & washboards.

Peter moved to Wrexham in 2006 and I have become sole owner.

Sailing is mainly Racing and Cruising on the Forth based from Dalgety Bay Sailing Club with its own small fleet of GKs.
