GK24 Owners' Association

Ghengis Khan

Our thanks to Owner Phil Leggett for the following text.....

My late father Tom Leggett purchased the yacht in 1982. His days of sailing a GP14 were over, and the GK proved to be a good substitute with very similar up-wind performance. During the next twelve years it was used mainly for club racing at Neyland Yacht Club. Much to my dismay he fitted a large Yanmar 3GMD inboard in 1994. The boat rested for about 6 years until I took ownership in 2002.

I sail a GP14 with my daughter in the summer and managed to coax another GP14 team to sail the GK with me in our clubs winter series, against much newer and expensive yachts. The GK performed very well and we won the PY division easily. The large weight below seemed to improve the boat, with no change in performance. It seemed to be a little less tender! I have just finished this year's winter series IRC, and despite several gear failures had several good results.

I intend to refit the boat in 2005 and enter Cork week 2006. The standing rigging needs replacing plus one of the Barbarossa winches is cracked at the base. Lots of other little jobs but the boat is generally in good condition.
